We invited Vanessa Macedo, Associate Lighting Designer at John Cullen Lighting to share with us five lighting do’s and don’ts that every interior designer and architect should know.

Lighting isn’t just an add-on or afterthought—it’s a fundamental design tool that shapes the way we perceive and experience space. Yet, it’s often underestimated or oversimplified.

As lighting professionals, we frequently find ourselves stepping in to solve problems that could have been avoided with earlier, more integrated thinking. To help bridge that gap, here are five essential ‘Do’s’ and five all-too-common ‘Don’ts’ that every interior designer and architect should keep in mind when it comes to lighting.

5 Lighting DOs

1. Do Think About Lighting Early in the Design Process

Lighting should never be left to the end of a project. The earlier it’s considered, the more harmoniously it can be integrated with the architecture and interiors. Early collaboration allows lighting to elevate a concept, rather than just illuminate it. Think about how light will support the function, mood, and visual hierarchy of a space.

2. Do Layer Your Lighting

Successful lighting schemes almost always use multiple layers: ambient, task, and accent lighting. Layering provides flexibility, depth, and drama. A single type of lighting—no matter how well-executed—can rarely meet all needs. Consider how users might interact with the space at different times of day and for different purposes.

3. Do Understand the Importance of Colour Temperature and CRI

Light quality impacts material perception, colour balance, and emotional response. Colour Temperature (CCT) influences mood – warmer tones create comfort, while cooler tones evoke alertness. Colour Rendering Index (CRI) affects how true colours appear under artificial light. Low CRI can flatten or distort a space, undermining your material palette and finishes.

4. Do Use Light to Define and Sculpt Space

Good lighting doesn’t just reveal architecture—it enhances it. Use light to draw attention to key elements: textures, forms, focal points. Shadow is just as important as light; contrast adds depth. Treat lighting as a design material in its own right, not just a utility.

5. Do Consider Control and User Experience

Smart control systems, dimming, and scene-setting options empower users and help lighting respond to different functions throughout the day. A well-lit space should feel effortless – controls should be intuitive, and scenes should support the intended atmosphere and activity.

5 Lighting DON’Ts

1. Don’t Default to Downlights

Recessed downlights are often overused and poorly placed. A grid of downlights might seem like a “safe” choice, but it can create a flat, harsh, and uninviting space. Over-reliance on them can also result in poor uniformity and unnecessary glare. Use downlights strategically – not automatically.

2. Don’t Ignore Glare

Glare is one of the quickest ways to make a space uncomfortable. Light should enhance visibility, not hinder it. Whether it’s from a poorly shielded fixture or light bouncing off a glossy surface, unmanaged glare disrupts the experience. Always consider viewing angles, especially in spaces like offices, dining rooms, and retail.

3. Don’t Treat Lighting as Purely Decorative

Yes, light fixtures can be beautiful—but their function should never be compromised. Decorative lighting is a powerful layer, but it must complement the overall lighting design, not replace it. Don’t mistake a chandelier or pendant as a substitute for proper ambient or task lighting.

4. Don’t Forget Maintenance and Longevity

Choose fittings and systems with realistic maintenance requirements. Lighting design should be future-proof, taking into account ease of access, lamp life, and the potential for replacement parts. This is especially important in hospitality, retail, and commercial environments, where downtime costs money.

5. Don’t Separate Aesthetics from Technical Reality

Lighting design lives at the intersection of art and engineering. It’s easy to get excited by moodboards and fixture catalogues, but every lighting idea must be grounded in technical feasibility. Luminaire outputs, mounting details, wiring access, and dimming compatibility all need to align with your vision.

Closing Remarks: Lighting as a Creative Partner

Interior designers and architects are natural storytellers – so is light. It guides people, reveals texture, creates atmosphere, and punctuates emotion. But this only happens when it’s given equal creative weight and a seat at the table from the start.

By embracing a few core principles and avoiding common pitfalls, design professionals can make lighting a seamless, expressive part of their work – not just a finishing touch.

Collaborate early, think holistically, and never underestimate the power of a well-placed beam. Because when lighting is done well, no one notices. But when it’s done brilliantly, everyone feels it.

When most people think of award schemes, they picture glamorous ceremonies, excited winners, and shiny trophies. And, while we at Wildwood Plus certainly help craft the stories that get our clients on stage (we’ve written hundreds of award-winning entries over the years), what many don’t realise is that we’re also the team behind award programmes themselves.

That’s right, we don’t just help clients win awards, we launch, project manage and promote award schemes from the ground up. With nearly two decades of experience in this space, we know what it takes to create an effective awards programme.

Trusted by Leading Industry Names

Now in our 31st year, we’ve have had the pleasure of working with several clients to bring their awards dreams to life.

CEDIA Smart Home Awards – This awards programme has been running for 19 years. It celebrates excellence in home technology and is a cornerstone of the smart home industry calendar.

We fully support the CEDIA team in determining the categories and criteria, selecting judges, contacting members to encourage entries, supporting the judging process, script writing, creating awards presentations and producing video content for the ceremonies. All this while also promoting the programme via a PR campaign.

Panasonic PRO Awards – For over 10 years, we’ve supported Panasonic in honouring outstanding HVAC project work across Europe.

In 2015, we worked with the Panasonic team to recognise that there was a need for an awards programme. Since then, this industry-leading manufacturer has awarded customers from 10 countries, with the awards running every second year.

Our team work on this project from start to finish for each edition. Beginning with setting the timeline for the programme, identifying the categories and defining the criteria, collating the entries and formatting them ready for the judging panel and announcing the winners across Europe through the PR campaign.

BIID Awards – Launched just four years ago, the British Institute of Interior Design Awards has gained great momentum since then, becoming a prestigious award win for interior designers.

We worked closely with the BIID team and an external events partner to help launch the brand-new awards scheme in Year One. From then, the programme has developed into an annual celebration that receives entries from interior designers and design studios across the UK and recognises the very best interior design projects.

We run an engaging and exciting awards campaign to help generate interest and awareness. We focus on PR and social media activity – including a paid social campaign – to drive entries. We then promote other milestones in the campaign such as the announcement of the shortlist and showcasing the award-winning projects. Other activities include creating video content, Instagram Live sessions to give top tips for entry, sponsor management and attending the judging day. We’re also part of the events team on the day of the awards ceremony held at the stunning Draper’s Hall in London, covering tasks such as social media coverage (including live updates on award wins), media liaison and filling goodie bags!

Each of these schemes is unique, and that’s where our tailored approach comes in.

Our team offers a full suite of services to deliver successful award programmes, including:

Strategic planning and positioning

Entry criteria development

Website and entry platform management

Judging coordination

PR and promotional campaigns

Finalist and winner announcements

Event communications (live or virtual)

Whether you’re launching an award scheme for the first time or looking to reinvigorate an established one, we’d love to help bring the creativity, logistics, and marketing know-how to make it a success. Let’s create something worth celebrating.

At Wildwood Plus, we believe in the power of awards. It’s not just about celebrating excellence, it’s also to build brand authority, grow your network and create valuable industry visibility.

Like countless other industries, the interior design sector is also undergoing a significant transformation driven by the integration of artificial intelligence (AI).

This technological shift is revolutionising how designers create spaces, offering plenty of new opportunities. However,
associated challenges to creativity and potentially to employment, are creating ripples amongst the
design community. So, is AI a friend or foe of interior designers?

AI: A boon to creativity and job satisfaction

There’s the obvious post-pandemic interrogation of our public and private spaces from a health and safety perspective, with air flow and occupancy levels becoming critical considerations of the same importance as fire and flood regulations and building codes.

It’s been suggested that AI-powered tools are enhancing creativity and efficiency across the design
process. Platforms like Adobe Firefly and Autodesk’s Dreamcatcher use AI to generate an array of
potential design options based on user prompts, allowing designers to quickly explore and refine
their ideas. Designers are also using AI tool Midjourney to brainstorm interior design projects and
source inspiration images to portray a mood and direction. These tools accelerate the ideation phase
of interior design, and may lead to more creative and personalised offerings.

On the topic of personalisation, solutions such as Houzz, an online community and platform for
home design, employs AI to recommend products and ideas tailored to individual user preferences.
Does it always get it right? No, but it’s still comparatively early days, and tools like this will arguably
get more accurate at deciphering user preference the more they are used.

Spatial planning is another area where AI is making a significant impact. AI algorithms can optimise
the utilisation of space, generating layouts that include desired hard furnishings while maintaining
aesthetics and functionality. This future-gazing Apple Store project covered by the British Institute of
Interior Design even uses AI to make real-time layout adaptations depending on each customer’s
needs and preferences.

Akin to other industries, interior designers can also utilise AI for streamlining the management of
concurrent projects, predicting timelines and assisting with planning and budgeting – helping them
speed through the admin and instead focus on the creative elements of their work.

AI: A threat to creativity and employment

Conversely, the integration of AI into interior design also brings a potential threat to creativity. There
is a risk that over-reliance on AI might stifle human creativity, leading to homogenisation and
‘parroting’ of design styles and a loss of unique, human-driven ideas. The automation of various
design processes also poses a threat to certain levels of employment within the sector. As AI tools
become more sophisticated, more routine tasks (especially the creation of visuals) may become
obsolete, impacting job security. According to a report by McKinsey, up to 30% of tasks in 60% of
occupations could be automated, highlighting potential for job disruption.

Data privacy is another valid concern by many. AI’s reliance on large datasets to function effectively
raises issues around the collection and analysis of personal data, including imagery, for personalised
design experiences. Ensuring compliance with data protection regulations like the GDPR is crucial to
mitigate these risks.

In addition, investing in AI software, training staff, and keeping on the cutting edge of advancements
may be both a time and monetary resource that smaller design firms or sole trader designers just
don’t have.

Humans + AI: A perfect design?

AI has already started to transform the interior design industry, offering exciting opportunities for
innovation, efficiency, and enhanced client experiences. And this excitement is valid.

However, the sector must also address the accompanying challenges, particularly in regard to the possible stifling of creativity and risk to certain job roles. Even being aware of this is a good prompt to start thinking about creative working practices and relevant reskilling of employees.

While AI does a good job of analysing data, and from a design point of view, suggesting an array of
different options or visualisations, it simply can’t replicate the emotional and intuitive aspects of
human creativity (and all the personal and cultural experiences that are intertwined within that).
After all, interior design isn’t solely about aesthetics; it also involves creating spaces that evoke
emotion and enhance comfort and occupant wellbeing.

The interior design sector will always need the human touch – real people on the ground creating
these designs in real life, collaborating with suppliers and contractors to make sure a space looks and
feels perfect, something AI cannot (at present!) replicate.

In our opinion, the future of interior design and the key to navigating this new landscape lies in the
harmonious integration of both AI and human creativity, where technology enhances but doesn’t
overshadow. It’s important to remember that AI is a brilliant tool, but it is just that. A tool.

At the entrance of Olympia, we were met by a vast array of beautifully curated exhibitor stands, each of them a spectacle in their own right. On the mezzanine floor, we watched in awe at the ‘Making Spaces’ craftspeople running live demos, showcasing their skills and allowing us to get hands-on and try it ourselves – this proved to be very popular among all attendees! Decorex Diningscapes was another new feature at Decorex this year situated upstairs, that showcased four expertly designed room sets crafted by leading interior designers Christian Bense, ND Studios, Pandora Taylor with Bonadea and Bertrando di Renzo with Les Ottomans. Each of the incredibly beautiful sets left us with an urge to go home and revamp our own dining room!

Decorex Design Talks returned this year and were yet again a HUGE hit. Whether it’s growing your business, delving into the future of the textile industry or listening to the founder of Mulberry talk all things fashion & interiors – The Design Talks had you covered! The talks theatre sponsored by Cole & Son was consistently full, as interior design enthusiasts listened eagerly to industry experts talk about all things design.

When seeking a place for rest and relaxation or perhaps a catch-up with journalists or other colleagues in the design community, the Decorex bar designed by duo Carden Cunietti and the VIP Lounge designed by interior design studio De Rosee Sa proved to be the perfect spot.

Decorex 2022 was a huge success, and we are delighted to have been part of such a wonderful event.

As the agency representing KBB, Europe’s leading Kitchen, Bathroom and Bedroom industry show, and the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID), we’ve connected both clients with this piece from BIID Registered Interior Designer®, Nicola Burt from Nicola Burt Interior Design, offering practical advice on good kitchen design.

The first thing to think about when planning your new kitchen is practicality. Not only does it need to look beautiful, your new kitchen needs to work as hard as possible for you!

So, my advice is to make a list of your requirements and focus on how you and everyone in the household will use the kitchen at various points during the day. Also think about how you use the kitchen during less busy times – dinner parties, entertaining and those occasions where families gather together and celebrate.

Work out how much storage and worktop space you need.

Consider the ‘working triangle’ – the sink, hob and fridge should ideally sit within a triangle for ease of access, prepping and cooking.

All this will help you with functionality and layout. Consider your must-haves. Do you need a large, full-height American style fridge, for example, if you are a busy family household? Or, perhaps, a top-notch coffee machine if you love a decent coffee first thing in the morning! Is a wine fridge a must-have because you entertain frequently? What about shelf space for cookery books and an island, if space permits, for breakfast, kids’ homework, or a glass of wine with a friend in the evening? How useful might a hot water tap be so that you don’t have to boil the kettle? And what are the advantages of freestanding versus integrated appliances?

Kitchen Layout

The next thing to consider after you have worked out your ideal layout is style.

Do you want a traditional style kitchen or a sleek, modern one? Do you need fixed units or freestanding? Are you after a clean, urban look or something, perhaps, more industrial?

There are so many different styles on the market, and kitchen trends evolve and change over time. Your kitchen should last you for at least 12-15 years so it pays to do your research and find a style you will be happy with for quite a while!

Once you have decided on the overall style of your kitchen, the next things to consider are:

Worktop and splashback finish – current trends for materials include Quartz, Corian, Neolith and Concrete.

Taps and handles –chrome, brass, gold and rose gold are all popular on-trend finishes.

Flooring – the flooring material, whether wood or tile, should be resilient and easy to clean and maintain.

Lighting – different types of lighting are required in a kitchen. General lighting for good overall light, task lighting for carrying out tasks, such as, food preparation, and ambient lighting for atmosphere, such as relaxing or entertaining.

Window treatments – These need to be primarily functional to control light, for privacy at night if required, repel cooking odours and be easy to clean.

A trade event, such as, KBB will showcase all the latest trends in kitchen design and is a fantastic resource and ideas showcase for kitchen and interior designers, like me, working with their clients to make the kitchen a warm, attractive and practical space?

With working from home now a reality for so many employees, what’s best practice for home office design? We invited British Institute of Interior Design Registered Interior Designer®, Chloe Bullock from Materialise Interiors, for advice.

What’s wrong with using a dining table and chair?

As you’ll see in this video from Posture People, dining tables are designed to be around 3cm higher than a desk. Couple that with a shorter person sitting at the table – you will then create some wrist pain problems.

Invest in a quality office task chair. This means you have the height adjustment to compensate for any difference in worksurface height. These chairs have casters rather than four legs for a reason. The easy rolling movement and ability to easily adjust position is really important to help avoid back pain. Almost every home workstation I have seen photographed online recently features four legged chairs. I know this is done for aesthetics – but please put your health and wellbeing first. You CAN buy aesthetically pleasing task chairs.

For added comfort – look for a back that is not fixed to the seat so there is extra adjustment and added lumbar support makes the chair extra comfortable too. Arms are a personal preference but it depends how frequently you sit back from the desk. I really like Herman Miller chairs as they are purpose-designed, repairable, and hold a resale value. You can even sell them back to Herman Miller at the end of their life. THAT’S sustainable design in action! Here’s my source for pre-loved HM chairs.

Laptops

Laptops really aren’t great for longer term working, especially if you’re using the built-in mouse and keyboard. A quick improvement would be to raise the laptop on a stand and use it as a monitor only – make sure your eye level is at the top of the screen. Then use a separate mouse and keyboard. There’s a whole host of pieces and equipment available from Posture People to adapt the furniture you have.

Movement

Get up and walk about once an hour. Try and do some stretches. While sitting, make yourself Y shaped by holding your arms straight above your head and gently lean back – repeat a few times a day. Roll your shoulders backwards and forwards.

Lighting

Sit near a window both to benefit from the view of the garden (biophilic wellbeing benefits) but also to maximise your daylight exposure to help your body’s circadian rhythm (our sleep cycle). Try to sit at an angle to the window (90 degrees, ideally) to avoid any glare on your screen. Get the lighting right. You may only have a central ceiling pendant light – in which case, it’s much better to use a task lamp in your work area instead.

About Chloe Bullock and the British Institute of Interior Design

Chloe creates animal-friendly, human-friendly and planet-friendly interiors, supporting both entrepreneurs and homeowners. She designs with a focus on sustainability, health and cruelty-free specifications. She is a FitWel® Ambassador and a keen follower of human-centric, healthy design – using standards, such as, WELL building standard, Building Biology as well as FitWel® to ensure spaces are healthy for the users.

Prior to setting up Materialise Interiors nearly 15 years ago, she was part of The Body Shop team delivering ethical global store concepts and specifications. Her ongoing commitment to environmental awareness, sustainability using circular economy principles and cruelty-free specifications learnt at The Body Shop, has translated into her own interior design business. She was the first interior designer in the UK to be VEGANDESIGN.ORG CERTIFIED. She is also a fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce.

The British Institute of Interior Design is the pre-eminent professional organisation for interior designers in the UK. Its growing membership represents both the commercial and residential sectors, from heritage to cutting edge. Internationally, the BIID is represented on the board of the International Federation of Interior Architects and Designers.
